Was ich meine, wenn ich von der Vernunft spreche oder vom Rationalismus, ist weiter nichts als die Überzeugung, daß wir durch die Kritik unserer Fehler und Irrtümer lernen können und insbesondere durch die Kritik anderer und schließlich auch durch Selbstkritik. Ein Rationalist ist einfach ein Mensch, dem mehr daran liegt zu lernen, als recht zu behalten; der bereit ist, von anderen zu lernen, nicht etwa dadurch, daß er die fremde Meinung einfach annimmt, sondern dadurch, daß er gerne seine Ideen von anderen kritisieren läßt und gerne die Ideen anderer kritisiert. Der Nachdruck liegt hier auf der Idee der Kritik oder genauer der kritischen Diskussion. Der echte Rationalist glaubt also nicht, daß er selbst oder sonst jemand im Besitze der Weisheit ist. Auch glaubt er nicht, daß die bloße Kritik als solche uns schon zu neuen Ideen verhilft. Aber er glaubt, daß nur die kritische Diskussion uns dazu helfen kann, im Gebiete der Ideen den Hafer von der Spreu zu sondern. Er weiß wohl, daß die Annahme oder Verwerfung einer Idee niemals eine rein rationale Angelegenheit ist; aber er glaubt, daß nur die kritische Diskussion uns die Reife geben kann, die nötig ist, um eine Idee von mehr und mehr Seiten zu sehen und sie gerecht zu beurteilen.

IL RAZIONALISTA AUTENTICO
Ciò che voglio dire, quando parlo di ragione o razionalismo, non è altro che la convinzione che noi possiamo imparare dalla critica dei nostri errori e dei nostri sbagli e, in particolare, dalla critica fattaci dagli altri e, infine, anche dall'autocritica. Un razionalista è semplicemente una persona a cui importa più di imparare che di avere ragione; che è pronta ad imparare da altri, non semplicemente accettando l'opinione degli altri, ma piuttosto lasciando volentieri criticare le proprie idee da altri e criticando volentieri le idee altrui. L'insistenza qui è posta sull'idea della critica o più precisamente della discussione critica. Il razionalista autentico non crede, quindi, che egli stesso o anche qualcun altro sia in possesso della sapienza. Ma neanche crede che la semplice critica come tale ci procuri nuove idee. Egli crede, piuttosto, che solo la discussione critica ci possa aiutare a discernere, nel campo delle idee, il grano dalla pula. Egli sa certamente che l'accettazione o il rigetto di una idea non è mai un evento puramente razionale; ma crede che solo la discussione critica ci possa dare la maturità necessaria per vedere un'idea da sempre più lati e valutarla correttamente.

THE GENUINE RATIONALIST
When I speak of reason or rationalism, all I mean is the conviction that we can learn through criticism of our mistakes and errors, especially through criticism by others, and eventually also through self-criticism. A rationalist is simply someone for whom it is more important to learn than to be proved right; someone who is willing to learn from others — not by simply taking over another's opinions, but by gladly allowing others to criticize his ideas and by gladly criticizing the ideas of others. The emphasis here is on the idea of criticism or, to be more precise, critical discussion. The genuine rationalist does not think that he or anyone else is in possession of the truth; nor does he think that mere criticism as such helps us achieve new ideas. But he does think that, in the sphere of ideas, only critical discussion can help us sort wheat from chaff. He is well aware that acceptance or rejection of an idea is never a purely rational matter; but he thinks that only critical discussion can give us the maturity to see an idea from more and more sides and to make a correct judgment of it.
