Unsere höchsten Einsichten müssen – und sollen! – wie Torheiten, unter Umständen wie Verbrechen klingen, wenn sie unerlaubterweise denen zu Ohren kommen, welche nicht dafür geartet und vorbestimmt sind. Das Exoterische und das Esoterische, wie man ehedem unter Philosophen unterschied, bei Indern, wie bei Griechen und Persern kurz überall, wo man eine Rangordnung und nicht an Gleichheit und gleiche Rechte glaubte – das hebt sich nicht sowohl dadurch voneinander ab, daß der Exoteriker draußen steht und von außen her, nicht von innen her, sieht, schätzt, mißt, urteilt: das Wesentlichere ist, daß er von unten hinauf die Dinge sieht – der Esoteriker aber von oben herab! Es gibt Höhen der Seele, von wo aus gesehn selbst die Tragödie aufhört, tragisch zu wirken; und, alles Weh der Welt in eins genommen, wer dürfte zu entscheiden wagen, ob sein Anblick notwendig gerade zum Mitleiden und dergestalt zur Verdopplung des Wehs verführen und zwingen werde?... Was der höhern Art von Menschen zur Nahrung oder zum Labsal dient, muß einer sehr unterschiedlichen und geringern Art beinahe Gift sein.

Le nostre idee più elevate devono - e non possono non - suonare come stoltezze, e in certi casi come delitti, quando, in maniera indebita, giungono all'orecchio di coloro che non sono fatti e predestinati per esse. L’essoterico e l’esoterico, quali venivano un tempo distinti tra i filosofi, presso gli Indiani come presso i Greci e i Persiani, insomma dovunque si credesse a una gerarchia e non all'uguaglianza e alla parità dei diritti - non si differenziano tanto l’uno dall'altro per il fatto che l’individuo essoterico se ne stia fuori e veda, valuti, misuri e giudichi dal di fuori e non dal di dentro; più essenziale é che guardi le cose dal basso verso l’alto, e l’esoterico invece dall’alto verso il basso! Ci sono altezze dell’anima, guardando dalle quali la stessa tragedia cessa di produrre un effetto tragico; e se si raccogliessero in uno solo tutti i dolori del mondo, chi oserebbe decidere che la sua vista spingerebbe e costringerebbe necessariamente proprio alla compassione e in tal modo al raddoppiamento del dolore?... Ciò che a una specie superiore di uomini serve di nutrimento o di ristoro, riesce quasi un veleno per una specie molto diversa e inferiore.

The Free Spirit
Whenever our loftiest insights inadvertently reach the ears of people who are not constituted or destined to hear them, they must-and should!-sound foolish, or in some circumstances even criminal. Earlier philosophers (among them Indians as well as Greeks and Persians, people in short who believed in hierarchy and not in equality and equal rights) distinguished what is exoteric from what is esoteric not only by the fact that the exoteric philosopher stands on the outside, and sees, estimates, measures, and makes judgements from the outside rather than from the inside: more important is that he sees things from down below-whereas the esoteric philosopher sees things from above! There are heights of the soul from which vantage point even tragedy ceases to have a tragic effect; and taking all the pain of the world together, who could dare decide whether the sight of it should necessarily seduce and coerce us to feel pity in particular, thus redoubling the pain? ... What serves to nourish or refresh the higher type of person must be almost poison to a very diverse and inferior type.
