3. La regola alla quale dobbiamo più fedelmente attenerci è di non seguire come pecore il gregge che ci cammina davanti, dirigendoci non dove si deve andare, ma dove tutti vanno. Eppure non c'è cosa tanto atta ad implicarci nei mali più gravi, quanto il nostro adeguarci alle chiacchiere, il ritenere giusto ciò di cui tutti sono fermamente convinti e, poiché disponiamo di innumerevoli esempi, il vivere non di ragione, ma di conformismo. Deriva da qui tutto quell'ammassarsi di uomini che si precipitano l'uno sull'altro.

3. Nothing, therefore, is more important than that we should not, like sheep, follow the flock that has gone before us, and thus proceed not whither we ought, but whither the rest are going. Now nothing gets us into greater troubles than our subservience to common rumour, and our habit of thinking that those things are best which are most generally received as such, of taking many counterfeits for truly good things, and of living not by reason but by imitation of others. This is the cause of those great heaps into which men rush till they are piled one upon another.

Nichts muss man also dringender sicherstellen als eben gerade nicht nach der Gewohnheit des Viehs der Herde der Voranschreitenden nachzutraben, wobei man nämlich nicht dahin fortmarschiert, wohin man eigentlich gehen soll, sondern dahin, wohin die Allgemeinheit nun einmal geht. Und keine Tatsache verwickelt uns in größere Übel als die, dass wir auf die öffentliche Meinung hin orientiert sind, indem wir das für das Beste halten, was mit der größten Zustimmung aufgenommen wird. Und weil wir viele Vorbilder haben, leben wir nicht nach der Vernunft, sondern auf die Ähnlichkeit zu ihnen hin. Daher die so große Menge von Menschen, in der die einen über die anderen stürzen.
