COSA DA "VITA" ALLA MUSICA

Un tema come questo non può di certo essere trattato esaustivamente in pochissime righe, anzi, ci sarebbe bisogno di un libro intero, di una serie di libri o addirittura una vita intera per descriverne solo una minima parte; tuttavia un solido ma al tempo stesso destabilizzante punto di partenza è, a mio parere, indispensabile. Il dubbio, altresì concepito come inesauribile curiosità, come descritto nei nostri articoli precedenti, sarà il primum movens di questo articolo.
Affinché la musica abbia un “corpo”, ossia una propria ragion d’essere, c’è l’assoluta necessità della compartecipazione di un grandissimo numero di fattori, sia concettuali sia contingenti. Parlo anche di fattori contingenti perché l’attributo indispensabile del suono, e di conseguenza dell’oggetto sonoro, è il tempo (v. Di Bona, Santarcangelo, 2018). La musica perciò è inestricabilmente legata alla dimensione temporale dell'esistenza, che la rende un soggetto estremamente debole e “già morto” non appena è stato concepito.
Ogni volta che noi ascoltiamo un preludio di Bach o una sinfonia di Beethoven assistiamo a un gigantesco e complesso intervento di rianimazione, e questo intervento di rianimazione sarà per sua stessa natura diverso da caso a caso, anche per una stessa composizione. Per di più, se volessimo proseguire con l’immagine della rianimazione medica, dovremmo tener conto che gli agenti indispensabili per la stessa non sono solo il medico e gli infermieri, ma anche il defibrillatore, la corrente elettrica, un letto per il paziente, l’attiva partecipazione e attenzione del personale medico, una comprovata qualifica di quest’ultimo, una garanzia del fatto che il defibrillatore funzioni a dovere, e infine un ambiente adatto dove rianimare il paziente.
Possiamo traslare tutto questo nei termini della musica, così come di qualsiasi arte dinamica e strettamente legata al tempo. Wilhelm Furtwängler infatti diceva nei Dialoghi sulla Musica (avvenuti negli anni trenta del Novecento): “nella musica dei grandi maestri classici concorrono parimenti i nervi, i sensi, l’anima e la ragione”. Abbiamo appena identificato quattro (riducibili a tre) degli innumerevoli fattori che concorrono al processo rianimativo della musica; e non sono quattro qualunque, ma quattro fattori che appartengono a ciascun singolo musicista (interprete, direttore e compositore):
I nervi e i sensi, riducibili a quello che io considero il corpo, ossia il vettore fisico che ci mette in relazione con l’esterno e il momento contingente, e l’unico mezzo attraverso cui noi possiamo comunicare efficacemente al mondo esterno le nostre idee e le nostre passioni. È nel corpo che risiede la tanto declamata tecnica.
La ragione, o la mente, ossia il centro analitico e organizzativo che mette in relazione le nostre conoscenze e le nostre idee al fine di dare un senso strutturale al nostro lavoro (interpretativo o compositivo che sia).
L’anima, o lo spirito, ossia l’ente passionale, primitivo, istintivo ed emotivo che influenza, apre nuove strade interpretativo-compositive e fornisce germogli ideativi alle altre due componenti.
Considerati nella maniera in cui sono qui rappresentati, questi tre fattori sembrano esistere, ed agire, autonomamente, ma non è così. Infatti non c’è alcuna evidenza scientifica che provi il fatto che si tratti di entità divise e auto-agenti (così come la reale esistenza stessa di questa classificazione, riducibile ai termini filosofici), ma ne esistono, sempre di più, che confermano l’esatto contrario, ossia che questi enti siano degli aspetti, delle manifestazioni di una stessa individualità, che sono strettamente legati l’un l’altro, in un continuo rapporto di interdipendenza collettivo. Per esempio: per il rapporto spirito-mente (o istinto-ragione) basta pensare al fatto che l’encefalo è costituito da più parti costituitisi in periodi diversi dell’evoluzione umana. Il sistema limbico, costituito da amigdala, ippocampo, talamo, ipotalamo e altre strutture minori, è il luogo in cui avviene l’elaborazione di stati emozionali come la paura, la rabbia, la felicità, la tristezza ecc. e di ricordi associati a stati emotivi. È la parte “istintiva” se messa a confronto con la corteccia prefrontale, regione invece dove ha luogo la pianificazione di comportamenti cognitivi complessi, la moderazione della condotta sociale e il “filtraggio” delle risposte emotive inviate dal sistema limbico. Non a caso il sistema limbico ha fatto la sua comparsa prima della corteccia prefrontale nella storia evolutiva dell’uomo. Volendo proprio fare un parallelo azzardato, il sistema limbico sta al Dioniso come la corteccia sta ad Apollo di concezione Nietzschiana; per un aspetto, invece, del rapporto corpo-mente possiamo citare il recente studio guidato dalla neuroscienziata Alice Tomassini (2018) dove si asserisce che nel cervello ci sono vari orologi collegati tra loro, uno per ogni stimolo sensoriale e che l’orologio principale sembra essere quello del movimento, che dà il tempo giusto e influisce sulla sua percezione.
Questo tipo di considerazioni avvengono già da tempo; praticamente ogni artista si sarà chiesto almeno una volta nella vita che rapporto ci sia tra spirito e mente. È il caso di Aleksandr Skrjabin, compositore vissuto negli ultimi anni dell’Ottocento e i primi del Novecento, in cui l’elemento istintivo-emotivo viene inteso dal compositore come l’elemento diabolico (anche qui, verosimilmente dionisiaco). Roman Vlad (2009) nella biografia di Skrjabin scrive:
l’elemento diabolico […] lo tentava all'occasione, gli piaceva contemplarlo, sfiorando il pericolo di rimanervi coinvolto. […] Skrjabin affermò la sua indipendenza dagli elementi diabolici portandoli alla luce del giorno, sottoponendoli alle leggi della proporzione e guidandoli nel regno della bellezza.
Per cui nel caso di Skrjabin, l’artista cerca consapevolmente con i mezzi della sua ragione, di dare forma concreta e adeguata a ciò che la sua immaginazione (o emotività) gli ha offerto in modo spontaneo, istintivo e non razionale. Ma non è tutto. Fin qui ho brevemente accennato ai tre fattori legati all'individualità dell’artista (corpo, mente, spirito), ma vorrei ricordare che ne esistono moltissimi altri legati anche a livelli diversi di analisi. Prendiamo in considerazione, solo a titolo di breve esempio, un’orchestra. Questa è costituita da un gran numero di esecutori-interpreti guidati dal direttore d’orchestra (un interprete-esecutore). Qui non dobbiamo soltanto considerare tutte le individualità che partecipano all'esecuzione, ma anche tutte le relazioni che avvengono tra tutte le individualità, sia a livello della mente, sia dello spirito, mediati entrambi dal corpo. L’ultimo esempio che voglio citare riguarda gli effetti acustici dovuti alle proprietà delle fonti sonore (es. gli strumenti musicali), come riportato nella tabella qui sotto, fattori anche loro determinanti alla “vitalità” della musica, e dimostrazione del fatto che ci siano più collegamenti di quanto immaginato sinora
In ultima istanza, questo articolo è ovviamente solo un accenno e un blando tentativo da parte mia di cercare di addentrarmi in uno dei più grandi misteri della creatività umana, e spero possa essere un punto di inizio per molti altri, e soprattutto un punto di confronto.

WHAT MAKES MUSIC “ALIVE”?
A topic like this can’t be exhaustively treated in just a bunch of lines. We would need instead a whole book, a whole series of them or even our entire life in order to get just a little bit into it. Nevertheless I felt the need to have at least a starting point, which has to be both strong and unsettling. Doubt (conceived also as endless curiosity), one of the cornerstones of our group, will be in this article our primum movens.
If we want the music to be “alive”, say to have its raison d’etre, we absolutely need the participation of a great number of factors, both conceptual and practical. I include practical factors since sound’s and auditory objects’ indispensable attribute is time (Di Bona, Santarcangelo, 2018). Music is then inextricably linked to existence’s temporal dimension, and this fact makes music an extremely weak subject: an already-dead-thing as soon as it is created.
Every time we listen to a Bach’s Preludio or one Beethoven’s symphony, we assist to a complex and huge recovery act. This “C.P.R” will be by its nature different on every case, even if we are talking about just one composition. Furthermore if we would continue with this metaphor, we should bear in mind that “C.P.R” doesn’t involve only doctors and nurses, but also electricity, defibrillators, bedsides, doctors’ and nurses’ full concentration and expertise, and finally a proper environment for C.P.R.
We could apply this metaphor to whatever time-based and dynamic art; Wilhelm Furtwängler said indeed, in his Gespräche über Musik with a german musicologist, Walter Abendroth: “in classical great masters’ music, nerves, senses, soul and reason are treated equally”, and with this Furtwängler’s quote, we have detected already four (reducible to three) of the infinite number of factors which contribute to make music alive again. Those factors are however extremely important as they belong to every single musician (performer, conductor and composer):
Nerves and Senses, reducible to what I conceive as the body. It is what physically connects ourselves with the outer world and the present moment, and it is actually the unique intermediary with which we can effectively communicate our ideas and passions to all the others. Technique (or practicing) is indeed one of the body’s main attribute.
Reason, or the mind, the organizing and analytical center which puts in relation our knowledge and ideas, and finally gives structural meaning to our work (no matter if we are performing or composing, what’s involved is really similar)
Our spirit, or the soul, our passionate, emotive and primitive entity which affects and opens new ways or ideas to our compositional-performative work, and gives energy to the other factors mentioned above.
The way in which I have showed these factors, might let the reader to consider them as separate and independent entities, but actually it’s not. There’s no scientific evidence that proofs these entities to be separate and self-standing (same as the classification I made, which in these terms can be considered just as a philosophical speculation). Besides, what science is bringing to light is the fact that these entities are the manifestation of a unique and coherent individuality, and that these entities are strictly connected each other in a mutual dependency.
Let’s give few examples: if we had to consider how the soul and the mind are relating each other, we would presumably analyse how different parts of our brain are working together, and we would also learn that some parts of it came earlier in the evolution than others. That’s the case for amygdala and prefrontal cortex. The first one is a formation of nervous tissue being part of the limbic system; it processes emotive states like fear, anger, sadness ecc. and calls to mind memories related to these emotive states. Amygdala, and generally all the limbic system, was evolutionally formed earlier than the second one I mentioned above, prefrontal cortex. This brain region on the other hand plans complex cognitive behaviours, moderates social conduct and “reviews” the emotive responses sent by the amygdala. Therefore, amygdala could be our “instinctive” part compared to prefrontal cortex. Maybe all this could have remembered you Nietzsche’s Dionysus and Apollo and their roles, in his Birth of Tragedy.
Let’s consider now mind and body instead: recently the neuroscientist Alice Tommasini (2018) and other colleagues found out that in our body there are many “clockworks” (or tickers), one for every sensory stimulus, but there’s a principal one which leads our movements and regulates all the others changing our global time-perception. Here’s the abstract:
Temporal processing is fundamental for an accurate synchronization between motor behaviour and sensory processing. Here, we investigate how motor timing during rhythmic tapping influences perception of visual time. Participants listen to a sequence of four auditory tones played at 1 Hz and continue the sequence (without auditory stimulation) by tapping four times with their finger. During finger tapping, they are presented with an empty visual interval and are asked to judge its length compared to a previously internalized interval of 150 ms. The visual temporal estimates show non-monotonic changes locked to the finger tapping: perceived time is maximally expanded at halftime between the two consecutive finger taps, and maximally compressed near tap onsets. Importantly, the temporal dynamics of the perceptual time distortion scales linearly with the timing of the motor tapping, with maximal expansion always being anchored to the centre of the inter-tap interval. These results reveal an intrinsic coupling between distortion of perceptual time and production of self-timed motor rhythms, suggesting the existence of a timing mechanism that keeps perception and action accurately synchronized.

It’s already a long time that those considerations are cyclically undertaken and faced. Basically every artist in his life would be wondering how soul and mind are interacting each other. One of them was Aleksandr Skrjabin, a composer who lived in the late 19th century and the first 20th; he considered his primitive-instinctive part as his diabolic element (or rather, his Dionysian companion). Roman Vlad (2009) writes in his Skrjabin’s biography:
The diabolic element […] tempted him at the occasion, he liked to contemplate it, touching the danger of becoming involved. […] Skrjabin affirmed his slope from diabolic elements bringing them into the light of day, bringing them to the laws of proportion and guiding them into the realm of beauty
Thus in Skjrabin’s case, the artist seeks consciously to shape a coherent and adeguate structure to what his imagination (or his emotions) gave him in a spontaneous, irrational and instinctive way. But it’s not all. So far I have just mentioned the three factors (body, mind and soul) related to artist’s individuality, but there are still many, many other factors to take into account from other point of views. Let’s just take an orchestra as a short example: this consists of many performers-interpreters conducted by an interpreter-performer. What we have to consider here is not just all the individuals participating together in making music, but also all the relations occurring among all the players, both at soul’s level and mind’s level, all communicated by the body. The last example I want to focus on is all the acoustic effects caused by sound source properties (e.g. musical instruments). In the figure below we can clearly see that also physical properties can determine music’s vitality, and gives us an overview of the great amount of underlying and hidden connections music can have.
In the end, this article is of course just a little overview and half-hearted attempt in this long and tedious journey in one of our most great mystery, and I hope that this could be a starting point also for other people but mostly a good point in order to start a deep conversation about it.
